Rosé Champagne: an enduring symphony of elegance

Updated: Jun 27, 2023

"Only a man with no imagination at all can find an opportunity to drink champagne." - once said Oscar Wilde. I'm glad that you're not like that.

In recent years, rosé champagne has become a fashionable drink. Once considered a niche category, rosé champagne has caught the attention of wine enthusiasts and has become a symbol of celebration, sophistication, and indulgence. With its delicate pink color and seductive taste, rosé champagne captures the essence of romance and celebration like no other. It is worth noting that it is currently the fastest-growing category of champagne. In many cases, the price of rosé champagne is higher than that of champagnes in the same category.

Where does the pink color come from? The distinctive shade of pink in Champagne is the result of a meticulous winemaking process. Winemakers have two methods to produce rosé Champagne. The first method, called "de saignée," involves maceration where the black grape skins for a short period briefly come into contact with the juice, creating the desired color. This interaction yields a range of pink hues, from pale salmon to vibrant coral. The second method is blending, where the winemaker combines white and red base wines in varying proportions. The winemaker's expertise in blending different wines plays a crucial role in achieving the desired expression of rosé Champagne. It's important to note that this method of blending has been allowed only in the Champagne region.

What has contributed to the popularity of rosé champagne?

The allure of its enchanting color, which creates a seductive spectacle in the glass and captivates wine lovers with its elegance. Additionally, the exceptional aromas and flavors of pink Champagne, ranging from vibrant red berries like strawberries, raspberries, and cherries to delicate floral notes and hints of almonds, have played a significant role. It is important to note the versatility of rosé champagne, as it pairs well with a wide range of foods, including fresh seafood, sushi, poultry, and creamy cheeses. Its versatility even extends to dessert pairings, where the wine's subtle sweetness complements fruit tarts and other treats. Doesn't it sound absolutely perfect?

Pink Champagne Myths

Myth: Rosé Champagne is inferior to white Champagne.

Absolutely not. Pink Champagne should not be considered inferior to white Champagne. It is a distinct style with its own unique characteristics and advantages.

Myth: Pink Champagne is for women only.

Absolutely not. While the color of pink Champagne is indeed pink, it does not mean that it is exclusively a feminine drink. Champagne, like any other beverage, should be enjoy by the all.

Myth: Pink Champagne can only be enjoyed in the summer.

Absolutely not. It is a pleasure all year round. While it is often associated with summer and outdoor festivities, its vibrant flavors and refreshing qualities make it an excellent choice regardless of the season. Pink Champagne can be the perfect companion for holiday celebrations, cozy winter evenings, or romantic spring gatherings.

Pink Champagnes That May Surprise

One of my favorite rosé Champagnes for the warm season is Dumenil Rosé Vielles Vignes. It evokes the memory of a beautiful summer afternoon. Its taste is characterized by elegant red berries, with strawberries and cherries taking the lead, complemented by a subtle hint of almonds. It pairs perfectly as an aperitif or with non-sweet desserts and white fish. This Champagne is a delightful discovery for me, as it comes from a relatively small Champagne house and cannot be found in supermarkets.

If you're looking for a more wine-like rosé Champagne, pay attention to Soutiran de Saignee. This rosé Champagne is like a basket of wild fruits. It is highly aromatic and complex, with a color reminiscent of rubies with orange hues. In terms of aroma, you can sense garden cherries, blackcurrants, blackberries, and blood oranges. As you sip, the Champagne unfolds beautifully in the glass, revealing new layers of aromas. This Champagne might be too heavy for daytime or afternoon, but it pairs wonderfully with evening meals, such as pork, fatty fish, or aged cheeses.

Billecart–Salmon Brut Rosé is a truly perfect choice for any occasion. This iconic rosé Champagne is characterized by subtle red berry aromas, delicate bubbles, and graceful flavors. The color can be described as salmon. It pairs wonderfully with delicate dishes, such as seafood, especially sushi, grilled shrimp, or oysters. The fine bubbles and notes of red fruits complement the refreshing and delicate flavors of the sea. It's no wonder this Champagne has captured the hearts of Champagne enthusiasts. When we traveled through Champagne with the girls, they were also enchanted by it. The color and taste simply mesmerize!
